Is There a Genuinely Free Habit Tracker?

Valkara Codex · updated 26 July 2026

Short answer: yes — but "free" in the habit-app world usually needs an asterisk. This page explains the common patterns behind "free" tiers, gives you an honest test to apply to any tracker, and then states plainly what is free and what is paid in Valkara, because we would rather you read the split here than discover it on day 30.

The three disguises of "free"

The capped free tier

Three habits free, the fourth costs money. The cap is placed exactly where a real routine begins — morning, training, evening already puts you over it.

The paywalled core

The app is free; the reasons you downloaded it are not. Statistics, reminders, history, widgets — each behind the door. You paid nothing and got nothing.

The trial in disguise

Fully free… for seven days. This one is neurologically well-timed: the paywall lands right when the first fragile momentum forms, and abandoning the app then usually means abandoning the habit too.

The honest test for any habit tracker: what happens on day 30 of daily use if you never pay? If the answer is "everything still works," the free tier is real.

Why we split it differently

Habit change is hard enough without a paywall standing between you and your own discipline. So Valkara's split follows one rule: everything between you and your habits is free forever. The only paid thing is other people.

Free forever: unlimited habits — daily, weekly, monthly, positive and negative — with critical strikes and milestone rites; the full RPG (XP, seven attributes, level-ups, Prestige at Level 100); 90-day shadow programs against destructive habits; training habits with personal records and MET-based calories; and body-signal context — heart rate, HRV, VO2 Max and sleep from your smartwatch, computed into biological age inside the habit tracker. Health data never leaves your device.

Paid: the social layer — warrior profiles, leaderboards, follows and kudos, guilds at launch. Running a community costs real server money, and we would rather charge for that transparently than quietly sell attention or data. It costs €4/month, or €39.99/year at the founding price locked for early adopters.

Right now: Valkara is in beta and everything, including the social layer, is free — no card, no trial countdown. Early adopters who register before 21.12.2026 keep the founding price for life.

Free is necessary, not sufficient

A price of zero does not make a tracker work. Nine in ten habit-app downloads are abandoned within weeks — free or paid — because checklists fight the brain instead of working with it. What keeps a habit alive is stakes, identity and a path back from failure; that is the actual reason Valkara is built as a habit tracker RPG rather than another list. The neuroscience is on The Science of Discipline.

Free habit tracker FAQ

Is there a completely free habit tracker?

Truly free habit trackers exist, but read the fine print. Many free tiers are limited trials, caps on the number of habits, or checklists with the genuinely useful features paywalled. A useful free habit tracker should keep the habit loop itself free: positive habits, negative habits, streak history, slips, recovery and progress you can keep using after day 30.

Why are most free habit trackers not really free?

Because habit apps often monetize the moment you are most invested. The common patterns are a cap of three habits, streak or history limits, reminders or statistics behind premium, or a free download that becomes a trial. The honest test is simple: what still works on day 30 of daily habit tracking if you never pay?

What exactly is free in Valkara and what is paid?

Valkara keeps the habit tracker core free forever: daily, weekly and monthly habits; positive and negative habit tracking; RPG progression; 90-day shadow programs; and recovery after bad-habit slips. The paid layer is social — warrior profiles, leaderboards, follows and guilds — so building good habits or breaking bad habits is not locked behind a subscription.

Can a free habit tracker help break bad habits?

Yes, if the free habit tracker includes negative habits, slip tracking and recovery instead of only positive streaks. For breaking bad habits, the tracker needs to record clean days, triggers, urges, slips and the next recovery action so one imperfect day becomes data instead of a reason to quit.

The Valkara habit tracker is free forever — no card, no trial countdown. Only the optional social layer (guilds, leaderboards, community challenges) is ever paid, and during the beta even that is open.
